Stackpole Lakes Conversations – The National Trust

Pobl Tir Môr is delighted to be working with the National Trust to help them understand and appreciate people’s connection with Stackpole Lakes (also known as Bosherston Lily Ponds). We are looking forward to understanding how and why people use the lakes and what makes them special. This information will feed into the wider Stackpole Lakes project and help to develop a long-term sustainable vision for the future.

Survey Update

The survey is now closed but we would like to say big thank you to everyone who has completed it or been to one of our events to chat to us.

This has been a fantastic learning experience, it has been lovely to meet so many people who are passionate about the lakes and to hear so many individual stories about why we love the area, the nature and the history of this amazing place.

We are now busy collating all the survey information and will be putting together a report for the National Trust.

If you didn’t get a chance to share your thoughts this time then please keep an eye out on our Facebook page for links to further engagement opportunities related to the Stackpole Lakes in the future.

Cymbrogi Workshops

Cymbrogi (an old Celtic word meaning ‘Companions of the Heart’) is an inspiring alternative education project, based on a 12 acre site at Lawrenny, overlooking the waters of the Cleddau Estuary.

Cymbrogi CIC have aquired funding through the Landfill Disposal Tax Communities Scheme and we are very excited to be helping them to design and deliver  a programme of workshops and activities supporting people from different backgrounds and generations to engage in hands on and interesting learning opportunities aimed at waste minimisation i.e. reducing waste to landfill.

Young people and community members attending these workshops will learn about the 5 Rs – Reduce/Refuse/Re-Use/Repair and Recycle – whilst having the opportunity to be immersed in a beautiful natural setting, learning about the site’s ecosystems – and hopefully gaining some additional wellbeing benefits too.

Our first workshops will be with Chris from Zombie plastics – and will be focused on using a plastic scanning machine to sort different items of plastic waste. These will then be shreded in another machine before being melted and injected into a mould which will help to turn the waste plastics into something useful.

A very hands of experience of plastic recycling.

CWMPAS Preseli Cares – Project Evaluation 2024

Pobl Tir Môr are excited to be taking on this evaluation project, specifically looking to capture and present people’s ideas and solutions, in their first-person voices, for community led care.

We will be listening sensitively to peoples own stories’, discussing carefully their ideas on how to solve social care problems and then presenting their ideas in an engaging and informative way to wider stakeholders.

Open To All 2024

During March Pobl Tir Môr successfully helped the Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority, and Visit Pembrokeshire, to organise the launch of their ‘Open to All’ project 2024.

The launch of this exciting project was held at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Milford Haven and hosted over 150 people.

The day started with a ‘meet the directors’ breakfast, where guests were able to chat to influential individuals and organisations. This was followed by a variety of speeches and training tasters from some very exciting speakers such as the Centre for African Entrepreneurship and professor Brian Garrod.

In the afternoon a ‘panel discussion’ was held and a ‘Pembrokeshire showcase’ highlighted some of the amazing work done by adaptive and inclusive activity providers working in our county.

There was a very strong focus on inclusivity, that reflects the aims and objectives of the project, and Pobl Tir Môr helped to organise and facilitate BSL sign language translation, simultaneous Welsh translation, and ensured that a tried and tested inclusivity statement was produced.

We look forward to continuing to support the ‘Open to All’ project throughout 2024.

Visual Note Taking for PACTO Launch 2024

Pobl Tir Môr recently attended the Pembrokeshire Association of Community Transport Organisations (PACTO) launch event at Haverhub to provide a ‘visual notetaking service.’

Bringing together the artistic skills of Dilys Burrell and Phoebe Lester to capture a visually compelling yet fully informative record of the key speeches, speakers and moments throughout the day.

Time Out For Carers

In December  2023 Pobl Tir Môr  successfully gained funding from the Welsh Government, PAVS and Pembrokeshire County Council to pilot a project that will develop a ‘Time Out’ break for carers in Pembrokshire.

The aim of this project is to enable carers to take a short break from their everyday caring activities. Rather than just focussing on a traditional break, however, Pobl Tir Môr will investigate how a break can also be linked with learning new skills, connecting with nature, discovering new things about Pembrokeshire, and connecting with like-minded people.

This project will be developed using the lived experience of carers and will result in a break that has been designed by carers, delivered by organisations that understand the needs of carers and tested by carers.

Local Food Development Grant Accessible Veg Project

Pobl Tir Môr have secured a small grant from the Pembrokeshire Local Food Development Partnership to work with Underwood Farm to take the first steps towards an Accessible Veg project in the Pembroke / Pembroke Dock area.

The aim of the project is to work with local people to test ways of getting locally grown veg to people that might not normally be able to access it for a variety of reasons.

The project will kick off with a meeting of local organisations working on food projects at West Gate Gallery and Coffee Shop on Tuesday 30th January 2024 from 3.30pm.

Angelina Sanderson Bellamy, Professor of Food Systems at the University of West England (Bristol) has kindly agreed to speak at the opening meeting about the T-Grains Accessible Veg Pilot Project. We would then like to hear about what local organisations are already doing to increase access to local veg, before introducing our project and planning next steps collaboratively.

You can book a space via our Ticket Tailor box office or by emailing dilys@pobltirmor.wales

Pembrokeshire Stakeholder Analysis & Engagement Plan for WWF Cymru

In Autumn 2022, Dilys Burrell Projects (now Pobl Tir Môr CIC) were chosen by WWF (World Wildlife Fund) Cymru to do an analysis of stakeholders in Pembrokeshire. We also made recommendations to WWF Cymru about how they could involve people in Pembrokeshire in a potential new project in the area. The project brought us together as a team for the first time, and gave us the opportunity to spend some time thinking deeply about what good community involvement might look like. As part of the project, we developed a ‘long list’ of stakeholders across Pembrokeshire, reviewed other relevant stakeholder engagement activities, and looked into the lessons learned from projects such as Summit to Sea. The report drew on our extensive knowledge of Pembrokeshire and its people, and incorporated our key principles of equity, diversity, and inclusion. WWF Cymru are currently refining their project ideas and we look forward to supporting them with their work in Pembrokeshire in due course.

CWBR Youth Graffiti Art Project Coordination for PLANED

Dilys and Ben provided support for a Graffiti Art Project funded by the South Wales Police and Crime Commissioner as part of PLANED’s Community Well-Being and Resilience Youth Project. The CWBR Youth Project focuses on connecting young people across Pembrokeshire with town and community councils and helping them to take a more active role in democracy in our county. This is a hugely important aim. However, keeping young people enthusiastic, making democracy relevant to them, and giving them a sense of control and voice can be significant challenges. By thinking outside the box and employing the creative skills of ‘Lloyd the Graffiti,’ the young people made large-scale graffiti artworks that represented their communities and highlighted the things that they felt needed to improve. Relationships between councillors and young people were made and strengthened by working together in safe spaces, and many people in positions of power in Pembrokeshire have pledged to help realise the requests of the young people. This project clearly aligns with Pobl Tir Môr’s aims of making good things happen in our communities, and we were able to contribute our organisational and project skills, as well as our experience of working with both councillors and young people.

Evaluation of the Open to All project for Visit Pembrokeshire

Dilys worked closely with Visit Pembrokeshire and their project manager to complete an evaluation of the UK Government’s Community Renewal Fund funded Open to All project in 2022. Dilys developed a Theory of Change for the project, which aimed to improve accessibility in the tourism sector, and worked alongside disability and community groups to complete the evaluation. Project partners included the RNIB, Pembrokeshire People First and the Sign and Share Club. The evaluation was used to inform a successful Shared Prosperity Fund funding bid in 2023, which Dilys helped to write.

Experiences for All research for Pembrokeshire Coast National Park

Dilys was chosen by Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority to complete an Experiences for All research project in 2020. The project involved desk research, interviews, survey work and focus groups and resulted in a list of recommendations being made to the Authority to help improve access to the National Park for people from all backgrounds. Recommendations from the report are being implemented by the authority and the research helped reaffirm Dilys’ understanding of the importance of the outdoors for well-being and the need for access to nature to be equitable.

Photography for National Theatre Wales – TEAM Pembrokeshire

Since 2018, Ben has regularly been employed as an official event photographer by National Theatre Wales – TEAM Pembrokeshire. This opportunity has given him a good insight into doing community engagement differently. By putting on ‘performance parties’ that utilise music, film, theatre and other visual performances, NTW-TEAM are able to appeal to different demographics, especially those who may not come to ‘traditional’ consultation meetings, and help break down barriers between decision makers and the community. At Pobl Tir Môr we take a keen interest in innovation and doing things differently and try to integrate them into our work wherever possible.

Marine Energy / Floating Offshore Wind

Louise has always felt passionately about using Wales’ significant natural renewable resources to provide economic, environmental and social benefit to Wales. Her career began in wind farm development in mid-Wales, before moving closer to home at a time of growing awareness around Pembrokeshire’s vast marine energy resource. Louise spent 6 years supporting the industry helping to grow a small Pembrokeshire focused project into the pan-Wales organisation Marine Energy Wales. She also helped to inspire the next generation of sustainable energy advocates through the delivery of the renewable energy component of the geography curriculum in a local secondary school. As a team, we are excited about the prospect of marine energy, including Floating Offshore Wind for our local area. The industry could unlock clean energy for millions of homes, as well as generating new employment and investment into the area and delivering significant social value for communities. As a Pobl Tir Môr team, we look forward to supporting the industry as a whole as it develops, ensuring the positive impacts for the local area are maximised.
